Cooperative Institute for the North Atlantic Region

CINAR conducts research and activities under six main themes: (1) Ecosystem Forecasting - Derive simulation models coupling physics to biological processes in the ocean; (2) Ecosystem Monitoring - Use and further development of an observing system that supports the data needs of CINAR ecosystem forecast models; (3) Ecosystem Management - Advance understanding of coastal, marine ecosystem health and associated socioeconomic benefits, and developing forecasting capabilities for management needs; (4) Protection and Restoration of Resources - Rebuild populations of species of concern, conserve habitat, and restore ecosystem function where it has been compromised; (5) Sustained Ocean Observations and Climate Research - Analyze and develop improved data sets quantifying Atlantic basin climate forcing, use of these data sets to examine the projection of climate modes (such as the North Atlantic Oscillation) onto the Northeast Continental Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem, develop enabling technologies for climate observations, and establish new observations at key locations; and (6) Education and Outreach - Transfer and translate the results of CINAR research products and operational tools to NOAA managers and other resource management professionals, train the next-generation NOAA workforce to deal with ecosystem-scale management issues, and inform the general public and stakeholders of the complexities and challenges associated with ecosystem-based management. CINAR's research activities assist NOAA in two of its Mission Goals: (1) Protect, restore, and manage the use of coastal and ocean resources through an ecosystem approach to management; and (2) Understand climate variability and change to enhance society's ability to plan and respond.
